Grisaille Underpainting Technique - Still Life

Due Date: Wednesday, February 24

  • Finish your grisaille underpainting from class, and paint on top using oil to complete the painting

    • If you are already familiar with the grisaille technique, try painting your grisaille in an unusual color

  • Work according to your own timeline - but try to have a complete painting by Wednesday

  • Upload your work to Padlet by 4:30pm EST on Wednesday, February 24th

Due Date: Saturday, February 27

  • Take the grisaille underpainting technique and use it to paint a subject matter of your choice: still life, landscape, figure or abstract

    • If you are focusing on the figure, we recommend attending an open life drawing class at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum where you can draw from a live model on Zoom

  • Bonus Experiment: do your Grisaille on top of an old discarded painting or a painting that has been primed with a unique color

  • For Saturday, you should have a completed painting that consists of an underpainted Grisaille in acrylic and oil paint over it

  • Upload your work to Padlet by 9:30am EST Saturday, February 27th

Experimenting with “DIY” Acrylic Mediums - Still Life

Due Date: Wednesday, March 3

  • Finish your sample sheet of working with the acrylic mediums from class

  • Experiment with different colors, thicknesses, and layers

  • Once you finish your sample sheet - use the grisaille technique and one of the acrylic mediums we played with in class to paint the still life

  • Upload your work to Padlet by 4:30pm EST on Wednesday, March 3

Small Studies - Finding Your Voice Through Repetition

Due Date: Wednesday, March 17

  1. Complete your small studies, or create more, from class today referencing the still life image

  2. Photograph three pieces of your art that you think has your voice and upload them to Padlet. If it is none, pick three that might have the beginning of your voice.

  3. Buy sumi-ink for next week’s class (we will use it for an in class assignment)

  4. Upload your work to Padlet by 4:30pm EST on Wednesday, March 17

  1. Complete small studies in a subject matter of your choice - still life, abstract, landscape, figurative etc..

  2. Have sumi-ink ready for class on Saturday
