Laura Shabott, Alana Barrett and their Cross-Country Students

“The students who connect with Laura and Alana show unique talent and an open willingness. I feel they have gained the confidence to stretch, explore, use color, and paint with self-authenticity."

Especially in difficult times, art elevates us. We have dived into the history of art and enjoyed the camaraderie of shared artmaking, even if virtual. Our students have poured over their compositions, colors, lines and shapes as if they are the most important thing in the world; and in that moment, they are.
The work presented here was inspired in an online learning environment. It is a joy to co-teach with Alana Barrett, and we are grateful to Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for offering our courses.
Berta Walker curated a beautiful exhibit and it is an honor that her renowned gallery is presenting this show. If there is one mission for our school within schools, it is to search fearlessly for your original voice. This exhibit shows the result of such a brave undertaking.

Alana Barrett
Over the last 16 months, Laura Shabott and I have poured our hearts into developing engaging coursework, thoughtful critique spaces, and a welcoming community for our students. As a result, our students have flourished in their art making practices, as evidenced by the work you will see below in this virtual show.
I am constantly impressed with the passion and vigor in which our students approach their assignments. Their commitment to their work and openness to new ideas, techniques, and technology inspire me everyday in my own creative process.
I am so grateful to Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for hosting our courses, to Berta Walker Gallery for presenting this show, and to Laura Shabott - for being my fearless co-teacher, mentor and friend, without whom this show wouldn’t be possible.

What People Are Saying
“Great things result when creative people join together in a project such as this one.”
- Dr. Gail Burke, PhD
“The quality of our work is a reflection on you (and maybe Bob Henry once removed). The show is truly a tribute to you [both] - what and how you have taught us, what you have brought out in each of us, how our classes were made into safe spaces to take big artistic risks.”
- Jane Bloom
“Thanks for making us a part of something bigger than ourselves. It is a thrill to see everyone's work.”
- Beth Dunkelberger
