Revisiting Experimental Surfaces and Materials in Painting

Week 1: October 23 - October 30

  1. Continue working on your sculpture of your still life from class

Materials for week two: Have sculpture on or by work area

  1. Gesso Brushes/Junk Brushes/ old rolling pin or glass bottle

  2. Duct Tape 

  3. Hot Glue (very optional)

  4. Sticks or poles (small to broom size)

  5. Old silverware, painting buckets (use old painting trays) 

  6. Small 3 inch roller with pole. 

  7. Rags

  8. Acrylic paint ideal

  9. Canvas, raw or primed, stretched or not

  10. Cardboard as large as you want

  11. Paper as large as you want 

  12. Drop cloth

Week 2: October 31 - November 6

  1. Prep a surface (cardboard, canvas, paper) with a color of paint

  2. Draw/Paint your still life on your prepared surface for 5 minutes

  3. Flip your drawing/painting over and cut out basic shapes you see in your sculptural still life for 5 minutes

  4. Use your cut out shapes to create a collage that has an irregular shape - you can use the front and back of the cut out pieces and add in new materials if you would like


Week 3: November 7 - November 13

Make a painting of your sculpture, collage and/or the original still life. 

  1. Pick a size: canvas drop cloth 4 x 6 or 6 x 8 feet. 

  2. Or paper 22 x 30 or larger

  3. Or canvas paper/pad 18 x 24 or larger

  4. A plastic protection.

Small - up to 18 x 24”, q-tips, bubble wrap, silverware, small brushes taped together, organic materials, flowers, fingers

Medium- up to 36 x 36”: 2” brushes taped together, branches, rollers with small pole. Bubble wrap.

Large - up to 9 x 12 feet - I will demo on 4 x 6 feet: swiffers, rollers, hands in gloves, feet, brushes duct-tape to a broom handle, or shoes you will sacrifice.

Week 4: November 14 - November 19

Saturday Assignment: You will make a weaving in response to artwork you made during class. MAKE THE LOOM. GATHER MATERIALS

  1. Some form of twine or ribbon to form a handmade loom

  2. A piece of cardboard 24” x 18” (see demo)

  3. Scissors

  4. Sharp x-acto knife cutting surface

  5. Tape or pins

  6. Gather fabrics, organic leaves, plastic bags, paintings or drawings, made into strips, yarn, ribbon, old ball of twine, cardboard 18” wide x 24” high

Week 5: November 20, FINAL CLASS

  1. Continue working on your weave

  2. Pick up to three pieces that you’ve made in this class that you want critique on
