Painting Through the Eyes of the Ninth Street Women

WORKSHOP DATE: June 19 - July 17, 2021

WHEN: Saturdays, 10am - 12pm and Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm

WHERE: Virtual on Zoom, Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill

SESSIONS: 9 sessions

PRICE: $400

TEACHER: Laura Shabott and Alana Barrett

The book, Ninth Street Women, by Mary Gabriel is the inspiration for this masterclass. We will look at the work of five women during the Abstract Expressionist movement: Lee Krasner, Elaine De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell. Often overshadowed by husbands and male critics, these women are being honored, exhibited and studied now. We will learn about the philosophies, color palettes and compositional choices these artists made through our own observation, replication and response. Each class is designed to include a review of student work, a lecture, discussions and a weekly assignment demonstrated by Shabott or Barrett. A midweek meeting on Wednesdays deepens your understanding of what makes art good (if not great) by looking through the eyes of Krasner, De Kooning, Hartigan, Mitchell and Frankenthaler. Reading Ninth Street Women (or having the book on hand) will be a requirement.  You will finish the course with a body of work created by picking one artist, studying theirprocess and philosophy, replicating a work of art and then creating your own art in response and reaction to your chosen painter.

All painting levels are welcome. Be open to change, inspiration and breakthroughs.
