Figure Drawing Using Color and Hofmann's Push/Pull Theory

WORKSHOP DATE: February 7, 2021

WHEN: Sunday, from 10am - 2pm

WHERE: Virtual meeting on Zoom, by the Provincetown Art Association and Museum

SESSIONS: 1 session

PRICE: $125 for members, $150 fro non-members

TEACHERS: Laura Shabott with Alana Barrett

Hofmann’s theory of push/pull, a principle based on the natural laws of oscillation, was the catalyst for two generations of Abstract Expressionists. Shabott and Barrett contemporize his work through courses that delve into the concept, application and use of the push/pull theory in making art.

With the figure as our muse and prompt, we will explore how color and shape respond to the figure through the lens of modernist principles. The course begins a lecture about Josef Albers, moving into a basic color theory module and moving onto the model to apply these ideas. Artists will leave with a deeper understanding of how color moves in and out of a two-dimensional surface in response to the figure.

Everyone is welcome.
