In this painting course, we will explore the history of geometric abstraction, how it disrupted the art world, and its historical relevance to the turn of the 20th century and both World Wars. Each week, we will focus on a particular geometric abstraction movement/collective, including the Dutch De Stijl, the Bauhaus School, and the Russian Avant-Garde, as well as contemporary artists continuing the legacy of geometric abstraction today. You will get to choose a preferred artist from each movement and study them during the week, replicating or responding to their artwork. Demos during class will instruct you how to paint in specific styles, as well as use other mediums like collage and drawing in your work. You will finish the course with a small collection of paintings that is based in geometric abstraction and the aforementioned movements, with room for you to add your own artistic voice/contemporary spin. This course will be taught online through Zoom and includes artmaking, discussion, lectures and thoughtful, provocative and compassionate critiques. You will be encouraged to join the group conversation, ask questions, and use critical thinking skills in your art and studio practice.
