“His talent was praised by Rothko, who said of his work that ‘the poetry penetrated every pore of the canvas to the last touch of the brush.” (Milton Avery by Edith Devaney, Erin Monroe, and Marla Price.) This contemplative course begins with Laura’s presentation of Avery’s work as he flattens and defines figures within a landscape or interior.
Students will be guided to create their own figurative expressions, first in charcoal, then in paint or collage in collective virtual work sessions with a model. At lunch, Alana will present a contemporary artist who embodies Avery’s principles, continuing to make art in guided exercises. A compassionate and insightful hour-long critique follows on Thursday evening. No matter what one’s level of experience, students will leave with artwork, a working knowledge of minimalist figurative abstraction and time well spent with other artists.
