In this painting class, we will focus on the cross-sensory relationship between color and sound. Every week the class will hear a new work by composer and trombonist Eli Feingold. The auditory piece will be specifically written to accompany a color theory assignment and presentation for that week. For example - if we are working with warm colors for that week, the auditory piece will involve “warm” sounds. Each Zoom course will begin with a presentation on color theory and exemplary artists for us to study - such as Vasily Kandinsky, Nick Cave, Robert Rauschenberg, Stuart Davis and more. We will also study the vital connection between jazz and many of the most prominent 20th century artists.
Students will then be provided with the sound composition via an audiofile, and we will listen together as a class to discuss it. Along with the auditory piece, students will be given a specific color assignment for them to focus on during the week, and their work will be critiqued in the following class. By pushing our sensory boundaries together, you will leave this class with a new perspective on how to see sound, and hear color.
Eli Feingold is a composer and trombonist from New Jersey. He is currently a masters student in the Studio Jazz Writing Program at the world renowned Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
